Blog 23 – The Proper use of English – Why Bother?

slang-language-300x216I’ve noticed people using slang excessively on the Internet recently…

Don’t get me wrong, I like slang.

Slang is convenient.

It is totally acceptable on the Internet as well as in a normal conversation nowadays…But something about it has been bothering me…

Yes, that’s right. Surprise, surprise.

“A mini rant with a sprinkle of what the actual fuck” is the forecast for the next 30 seconds.

I totally get it when you abbreviate a word. You know…to get your message across to the recipient without having to write the whole word out.

That is acceptable. It saves time and blah-di-blah.

However, what I don’t get is…

When someone substitutes a letter for a another letter (or character) of similar sounding, just for the heck of it.

E.g. h3y, haw arr yuh on thiz fyne azz d4y?

Wait…What? Why? Is there something I’m missing?

I’m pretty sure we’ve all been through that phase at some point in our lives, when we use slang like there is no Oxford’s Dictionary, but once again…

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

Ah well. Guess I’ll have to let this one slip an’ all.

Why Bother?

Peace,

Syd

  1. y0 175 b3c4u53 175 fun when you’re a teenager. Also, I’ve read that 1337 (leet) came about as a result of gamers and online commentors saying what they wanted without worrying about language/profanity filters. I’m not 100% about this though.

Also also, I hate when people use “hbd” for happy birthday. It’s unnecessarily lazy and also an inaccurate acronym…

    • I’m still a teenager lol! And I thought it was “loot”??? Hahaah I hate “hbd” too …it’s like hey I don’t like you hut happy birthday! Hope u enjoyed the article!
